IT'S CLIMATE WEEK NYC

LET'S TAKE ACTION TOGETHER

Since we began in 1978, Aveda has been committed to caring for the world we live in through mission-driven business practices, with environmental responsibility as a guiding principle. In 2020, our founding mission has never been more important—or relevant.

In celebration of Climate Week NYC (September 21-27), 2020’s biggest climate summit, we’re discussing the ways that we’re addressing climate change and sharing how you can do your part, too.

Aveda for the Earth

At Aveda, we believe that honoring the Earth and running a business don’t need to be competing ventures. This year, we installed a solar array at our 58-acre Minnesota headquarters to provide approximately 50% of our manufacturing facility’s annual energy demand. We are proud to responsibly manufacture our products through 100% wind and solar energy.* By conserving energy via renewable resources, we hope to model a new way forward: One that views our Earth’s well-being as an essential business asset.

The ingredients for sustainability

We also know that when it comes to high-performance hair care, nature knows best. This is why we continually strive to increase our use of naturally derived ingredients whenever possible. On average, our hair care formulas are 90% naturally derived,** which means you can feel good about what you use on your hair.

We start at the source, working with organic, locally-owned farms wherever possible via programs like our partnership with Nisarga to source Ayurvedic ingredients. Nisarga collaborates with small farms that are committed to maintaining biodiversity while engaging in organic fertilization and manufacturing practices.

Initiatives for our planet’s future

We have implemented several programs to help reduce our impact on the environment, beginning with our carbon footprint. Following our successful Earth Month pilot, we are now offsetting 100% of the carbon emissions generated by shipping U.S. orders placed on Aveda.com.*** In our packaging efforts, we're mindful of our environmental footprint and work to maximize our use of recyclable and post-consumer recycled materials. For example, we strive to use 100% post-consumer recycled materials in our bottles, tubes and jars, and where we can’t, we combine post-consumer recycled materials with bioplastic made from sugarcane, which is not detrimental to recycling systems.

Aveda has been a cruelty-free business since the very beginning. Additionally, we have been manufacturing all vegan formulas since July 2019, and we are committed to having all vegan products on shelves by 2021. Veganism isn’t simply about loving animals, it’s also about preserving our Earth and helping to address climate change.

With every purchase of an Aveda product, you are supporting our mission of care and sustainability at heart.

It's time to take action

How can you make positive changes to help address climate change? Here are ten suggestions:

1) Join a virtual panel via Climate Week NYC, such as “New Technology is Growing the Clean Energy Economy” and “Fitting a Square Inside the Circle: Sustainable Packaging Solutions Driving a More Circular Economy.”

2) Save energy by unplugging appliances.

3) Buy from your local farmer.

4) Choose products that are designed with the planet in mind.

5) Walk instead of drive whenever you can.

6) Conserve energy by air-drying laundry.

7) Plant seeds, veggies, herbs and trees.

8) Eat vegan for one week.

9) Donate to charity: water.

10) Replenish the environment by composting.

*Product manufacturing is powered by Aveda’s solar array and/or wind energy through renewable energy credits and carbon offsets.

**From plants, non-petroleum minerals or water.

***Aveda U.S. is funding three emission reduction projects to neutralize emissions as a result of deliveries made from our fulfillment center to our consumers’ delivery addresses. Offering carbon offsets is just one more way to continue to care for the world that we live in.
