THE BEST TEA FOR YOUR AYURVEDIC TYPE

A CUP OF TEA MAY BE JUST THE THING

TO BALANCE YOUR VATA, PITTA OR KAPHA DOSHA

In Ayurveda, the ancient Indian art of healing on which Aveda is based, our bodies are governed by three doshas: vata, kapha, and pitta. These doshas are thought to dictate what we need to feel healthy. For example, someone with a pitta type may have a low tolerance for heat, while someone with a vata dosha type may have a low tolerance for cold. And while tea is good for everyone, certain doshas can benefit more from specific types of teas. So why not think outside of the bag when warming up a cup this fall? Helga Hefner, Manager of Professional Skin and Spa Education at Aveda, explains what to sip for maximum health and enjoyment.

• If you are a vata type, you may often feel stressed. Therefore, Helga recommends calming teas like chamomile. Helga prefers loose-leaf teas, but bagged teas are definitely OK too.

• If you are a kapha type, you may often feel sluggish and could benefit from something energizing. “I like peppermint or eucalyptus in the morning,” says Helga. Optional: Add fresh lemon, ginger, or turmeric (just a pinch!) to the water for an antioxidant boost.

• If you are a pitta person, you’ll want a tea that is soothing and keeps you balanced. Again, chamomile is a good choice.

• For all doshas, our Comforting Tea is wonderful after a meal. It contains licorice, which may help with digestion. To sweeten your tea, if desired, Helga recommends raw honey — but add it to your tea once it has cooled. Better yet, try to develop and cultivate your taste for the flavor of the tea, unsweetened. You may find that eventually you don’t crave sugar at all!
